Iceland, data centers, inward investment and finding it difficult to move

Published on 9th February 2012 by Ambrose McNevin

Sitting in a Viking Centre, outside Reykjavik waiting to interview Colt about its Icelandic customer, Verne Global.
What we found out this morning is that the foreign minister, Ossur Skarpheoninsson, is meeting today with Emerald Networks about its planned spur on its trans-Atlantic cable. He has had lots of meetings with big companies who are viewin Iceland for their data center location - Verne, he says is a pioneer which will act as the ice breaker.

We heard from Ingvar Bjarnason, CCP’s IT Director, CCP is an online gaming company which is using Verne's data center for its back office systems. It's primary site for serving its 400,000 users is in Telecity in London's docklands from which it is 'difficult to move.'

New services and requirements will perhaps be easier to service than finding customers to migrate.
