Cable & Wireless is expanding its data center presence by quarter, using a 4.3MW South East England facility provided by data center outsourcing firm Infinity.

The Tier III facility will be ready for data hosting late 2012.

According to Cable & Wireless Chief Executive Gavin Darby, the company expects demand for data hosting to increase in the coming year.

“Data hosting is one of critical areas of focus for the near future and will be a vital part of our return to growth,” Darby said.

Last year the company was forced to issue a profit warning after shares slipped by 16.9% in June. Following this, previous Chief Executive Jim Marsh resigned.

It then said it thought profits would be five to 10% lower than expected and cut its dividend for the financial year by 2.25p a share.

In its interim results released in November, the company said trading results had been brought back up to market expectations, following a number of UK contract wins, including a contract with the UK Government and a 7% increase in global contracts.

It also announced it would be bringing more data center capacity online.

Infinity has hd its own share of success in the last year. In November it announced the addition of 125,000 sq ft of additional data center space in Slough, with 34MVA of power which will be operational mid 2012.

The company also won the Data Center Leaders Award for Data Center Blueprints for a high performance data center it built to optimal efficiency for a financial services client close to city trading platforms (you can see more on this in FOCUS 20 out March).
