CyrusOne has purchased 30 acres of land in north of Dallas to build what it says will be the largest data center facility in Texas, and one of the largest in the US.
The Cincinnati Bell-owned company plans to use free cooling and to innovate to bring costs down at the facility for its third data center in the Texas area, which it said could have the lowest PUE in the state.
The brownfield site already has a structure spanning 700,000 sq ft on it, which CyrusOne plans to turn into 400,000 sq ft of LEED Platinum 2N data center space providing 250kW per foot for 100% uptime.
CyrusOne CTO Kevin Timmons, who first announced CyrusOne’s massive expansion plans in December, said the data center will be unique to the Dallas market, not only because of its size but because of its use of free-air cooling and innovative electrical designs.
“I am really excited about this project, as it’s of the size and scale that historically was only available to the giant ‘web-scale’ companies,” Timmons said.
“But more importantly, we will be able to take advantage of free air cooling and will implement several cutting-edge concepts in our electrical back plane that all translates into lower costs for our customers and helps the environment.”
In all, CyrusOne President Gary Wojtaszek said he expects the data center to be 50% more efficient than customers could achieve with inhouse operations.
Timmons said demand from CyrusOne’s Fortune 500 companies, which last year pushed it into the European market with a data center in London, is driving the need for more space in the US.
