Colt has become the first data center operator in Europe to receive the Uptime Institute’s Management & Operations certification for a data center, which covers third-party assurance for site management.
Colt had to undergo extensive auditing of processes used for servicing equipment, its investment in training and the effectiveness of communications to both staff and subcontractors for its London 3 data center certification, according to Colt VP of Operations Guy Ruddock.
“This criteria is deemed essential to achieve full uptime potential, obtain maximum leverage of the installed infrastructure and design, improve the efficiency of operations and realize opportunities for energy efficiency,” Ruddock said.
“Human error is one of the biggest causes of data center downtime, costing companies thousands of Euros.”
Colt’s Tier III 10,500 sq m London 3 data center is made up of a series of modular data halls offering 750kW or 825kW.
It sits 40km from the center of London, outside London’s major ring road – the M25.
The Uptime Institute said that the M&O certification was designed by the data center industry itself and is based on a set of criteria drawn up from the Uptime Institute’s Tier Standard: Operational Sustainability by a series of stakeholders, including Colt.
It covers staffing, training, preventative maintenance, operating conditions and housekeeping and planning management and the coordination of practices and resources.
In the US, Equinix has also received an M&O for its Ashburn, Virginia campus. Equinix was also part of the group that helped for the standard. you can read the full story here.
